Panic attacks are periods of intense fear that are often accompanied by uncomfortable physical symptoms. These symptoms include heart palpitations, chest pain or discomfort, tingling or numbness in the hands and feet, shortness of breath, and others. In order to be diagnosed with panic disorder you must have recurrent unexpected panic attacks at least a month apart and the attack should cause considerable distress.
